This is a kid-friendly fun educational site. I could see where the children would quickly get lost in the different activities available. There are games, videos, websites , various languages, and a virtual place to design their own avatar and personalize their page. With online learning in education being at the forefront, this site will prepare you and your preschooler for school. This site has a step-by-step process for the parent and child to work together. If you have limited experience in this area, this site will be less threatening and should give you the confident you need to work one on one with your child. One of the best features is the parental control that will enable you to protect your child from any sites that would not be appropriate for their age. I enjoyed the email feature where the children would communicate with friends through e-cards and drawings with not reading or writing experience. Also having a multi-lingual feature is a plus for parents and necessary for educators. A concern I would have is the amount of time a child spends on the computer. Some children would gladly choose the computer over playing. This is the parent and educators responsibility to monitor. This site is one of the best I have seen and wish this was around when my children were young. I would gladly use this with my weekly lesson plans and themes to enhance their educational experience. However, because this site is so advanced and different. It would be the educators responsibility to present this as a valuable tool for the child's future. One way this could be done is to have an open "parents meeting" to share and answer questions. It would also be wise to have the site available to surf while the parents are in attendance. This site was great and I plan on recommending it to my colleagues!
DeVona~ this is great information. I had not heard about KIDO'Z site before. It sounds like it would be very interactive - especially for elementary age students.
In regards to Kido'z, I'll look into it. I would like to know if it is something that could be useful in intermediate or highschool with special ed kids and learning support students, even with english language learners as a starting point for interactions in elementary school. Thanks
This website allows the teacher to check whether the games the children are playing are developmentally appropriate and educational. This resource is useful for teachers who teach K-6. As an educator, I would use this website to make sure the children are playing games in their free time that are appropriate for their development and that they are educational and not just arcade games or anything like that. As always, I would be on the lookout to make sure they are not always using their free time at the computer.
This is a website that offers an intuitive, elegantly simple software system focused on task sharing and delegation. While the company's main focus seems to be on business organization, this could work very well in a classroom situation or in school administration. The short video on the front page shows a user-friendly program that allows for constant communication and feedback on how group projects are progressing, the ability to take surveys, and quick delegation of tasks. This would be great for coordinating any group projects for kids, or to set up with a class to give homework reminders and promote responsive top-down and lateral communication. This also functions as a great personal organizers, which could be especially handy for children (and teachers) that need extra help keeping on task.
I also took a look at Games Classroom. I feel the site needs some work, but it's a great idea. I tried a few of the games to find a number of broken image links, poor loading times, and confusing composition, but I'm sure thing could be on an individual basis between games. I would like to see the site streamlined for better quality control, perhaps. Hopefully, they can sort out these issues. Great find!
I was almost overwhelmed by all of the web 2.0 tools!
I found one called dipity.
Dipity is a site that allows you to create your own timeline. While this is used for peoples lives or "autobiographies" I found myself thinking about how fantastic it would be to create developmental timelines for the children in my care. In my pre-kindergarten classroom we keep a running record (called a developmental portfolio) with information regarding the child. There are observational notes, children's art artifacts or writing samples, and more included in order to SHOW the child's development over a period of time. I think this time line would be a great way to upload the work (after scanning it into the computer for art or writing) and put it into the timeline. Then, later on, we could check the beginning of the year's writing samples and compare to the end of the year. I'm really hoping to be able to use this in my classroom but I have to get it okayed by my director. It could also be used as a visual aid for children to set goals and then mark what they've done to meet those goals (as for older children or teens).
What a wonderful site! There is so much to do and so many different options that you'd constantly be finding new things! I can so appreciate how it allows children to run searches without the parent or caregiver or teacher having to be worried at what sort of things they find! With this site we can give children freedom and independence within the confines of a safe place on the internet!
Dear Professor Mattis, Tamika said that Kidopo is a wondreful site.. I could use this within my childcare because it has alot of educational resources such as different games, printables like tracing, understanding/recognizing the alphabets, numbers and colors. It also has a place where the childrhen can make their own videos that they can share. There is so many activities too that would prevent the children from becoming to bored. It's a great site if you have any extra time check it out. Would benefit whole lot. Thanks Tamika Jamison
Kidoz sounds like alot fun not just for the kids, but for the adult too!
I found one that was quite interesting it's called Voxy it is a language learning platform. It allows the learner learn on the go from home to office to school. It has aps for your phone, and because most people quit before they learn the language they want to learn. This program allows you to read whatever you want to read. Whether the news or facebook. You learn by everyday text in the language of your choice. The benefits for teachers include web based- no software and installation is easy authentic material for homework, built in reading comprehension and vocabulary building tools. lessons are divided up so it is not so much at once. allows for monitoring of students engagement and success, easy to use reporting encourages group work an collaboration
The down side to this is it is not for every age, although if an adult were to assist they would be quite capable
I could see myself using this in a classroom, because of the collaborating feature and affordability
Notely.Net- Students of all ages can use this web application to take notes during school. Notely can also keep track of homework assignments, calendars and has a whiteboard feature. The whiteboard can be used to write and share content with chosen friends. You can also upload pictures, media resources and video. Dashboard has options like calendar, courses, note task, to-do, journals, mindmaps and settings. I would recommend Notely for students and teachers. Teachers can use notely for lesson plans, grades and resources for their classroom. Notely.com is a great tool to teach organization skills. Only down side to Notely is the application does not clearly specify how much storage space is available on the website.
Dipity sounds like a great tool for pre-school and elementary teachers to track the student's progress thoughout the school year. The parent's would be delighted to see the progress their child made during their time in your classroom.
I think Kido'z sounds like a great idea for younger students. Since I am going into secondary education I wanted to find something that would be equally appealing to high school students. I thought that twiducate seemed like a really great idea. Twiducate is a social networking site used by teachers and students outside of the classroom. It is educational and safe. The teacher has complete control over the account and it is not blocked by most school firewalls. Teachers can create a private network where classroom posts can only be seen by the teacher and students. The site will give students skills in web 2.0, as many will need to be able to use social networking sites and blogs in the business world. It can also help students in reading, writing, and coming up with their own thoughts and ideas outside of the classroom. The site can be used to share ideas, post discussions, deadlines and homework, share links and video, keep parents informed, work together on assignments, and stay connected with everyone in the class.
Kidopo I reviewed this site and was enjoying playing in the card and board section. However, I was beat by the computer at connect 4, I guess I need some practice. In my observation, this site has many educational benefits. However, it would be difficult to pinpoint any certain age group because the games all seemed to be jammed together for all ages. This site would be beneficial in an elementary setting.I do not believe it would work well with a preschool class.
Littlebirdtales.com I found this site to be an excellent source for an assessment tool. Not only that but a way for children to be their own person. It is free!!!! This site allows for children to use their creativity and self expression to develop their own books. They don't have to worry about the ads, merchandising, and there are no external links. This site also reinforces reading and writing skills. I could see myself using this site in my center and during my student teaching.
Allyson I visited Kidoes after reading about it from all of you and it is very useful. I would like it to be free. The littlebirdtales.com sounds good and it is free!!!
Schoology Schoology is a pretty interesting website. it works similar to the site we use in this course but is more on the lines of Facebook. It allows students and educators to interact outside of the classroom. Teachers can post assignments, give tests, and help students find additional resources for their class. I thought that this was a pretty cool website because it is a hybrid that combines school and social media. Almost every student over the age of 10 has used at least one social media site sometime in their life. They are how kids communicate these days. Why not use them to help kids learn?
I enjoyed the E-Learning for Kids. It is free but they do ask donations. The Math world was my favorite because it would be very easy for my 3yr olds to understand. It also would help the English language learners because it speaks in different languages and this way the parent would be able to help the child at home. I also thought the Tonara application for the Ipad was very helpful. It brings up sheet music and rate how you are playing. It also turn the pages. I enjoyed exploring Web 2.0
I was AMAZED with Little Bird Tales. I agree with Laura Pryor, that this is an excellent tool to use in the classroom that is 100% FREE. What a great way to reinforce reading and writting skills at any level. This would be such a fun way to encourage creativity and self expression. Parent involvement is such a huge part in Early Education, and to have a tool like Little Bird Tales, where parents can help thier children tell an interactive story led by their voice and add thier own pictures an artwork. This tool would also be excellent to use in a project approch. The children would be able to actually see and hear the final project. I also, like the fact that it was made with kids in mind, so there are no ads or external links. I can not wait to experiment more with Little Bird Tales with a group of children in the near future.
What a great resource for teachers! I was very impressed by all the sites that are focused on education for young children.I really enjoyed being able to play the games on Wizkidsgames, they focus on the preschool age 3-5years old.The game Ron gets dressed had step by step direction for the child to learn the proper clothing to put on for whatever weather is going on, it also tells the child about clean and dirty landry and where dirty laundry goes. I really think my 3 and 4 year olds would love to play that game. I also found Florence the frog very fun and informative for a child to learn direction such as up,down, left and right. My son who is 10 enjoyed plaing that one it is fun to make the frog jump from lily pad to lily pad. At the end of each game they alway give the child some form of encouagement, such as GREAT JOB! I must also agree with Nina Nelson on the Little Bird Tales, I loved the interaction the children can have with not only other students but with parents as well. I also thought it would be great for all children including special needs and culutral diversities such as different languages, how exciting to have a story in your home lanuge to share with everyone.
Overwhelming!! That was my first impression of all the tools that are available for use. There was just so many to browse through. Eventually I found one that I think would be the most appropriate for what I plan to do with my career as a High School English teacher. EduSlidePro seemed like it was a well put together platform for use in an educational setting. As an educational instructor, this site would allow for several different educational resources to be implemented at the same time—chat rooms, task based learning, video courses, powerpoint presentations, course customization, group projects, as well as allowing for grade and progress tracking, just to name a few. I am glad this research project was part of this course because I feel as though these resources will definitely be beneficial in the near future.
I know that children learn best through play; I am going to have to check out the game site. Kidoz as well. This site had so much to offer to us during our teaching career.
There were so many different toolsI could use.Idecided on Scriblink as the one to write about it is like a white board on your computer it would serve as a great comunnication tool. With this tool you could communicate with as many people as you want and be able to write back and forth to each other. This would serve as a great communication tool for coworkers and parents when sending reminders, notes, or emergency notices. Benefits of this tool is that most everyone is connected to the internet through either their mobile device or computer. It would save time and paper by communicating this way. The negative thing about this tool would be that there still are people who do not have daily access to a computer or mobile device. Also like anything these devices could have a problem and you would not be able to recieve or send things for hours, days, weeks, at a time, this would not be good in a case of emergency or amediate response.
Tiffany~ I like your suggestion. It is very important for teachers to keep track of their student’s learning and performance. Finding a limitation in an early stage will allow us to improve their learning process. Another cool thing about Timeline is that you can have each student’s medical record and be able to update it. A red alert about any medical concern will avoid emergency issues. Thank you!
It can be a difficult task to keep children involved and reading, there are so many other distractions. I enjoyed Little Bird Tales for this reason, it is a fun interactive way for children to enjoy reading and storytelling. And this site might even encourage and inspire future authors and illustrators...
With this assignment, I found that Julpan's technology was really interesting. I would like to use Julpan someday either as a teacher or parent because there are activities that we can do with Julpan that will really help us find something that we are all interested as a group. Julpan's help us focus on analyzing social activity in order to improve search results. By spotting the most relevant contents that we are talking about in the group, Julpan will lead us to the contents that we will be interested to find. This web 2.0 tool will benefit us in the classroom by making us search something easier. When we search something, it will also filter the spam that will help us get the high-quality content that we are looking for. However, because it will help everybody search in easier ways without having to know what keywords to search for, it will make them lazy to learn how to search in the right way.
Thank you very much for the information De Vona, you found very interesting site that I never heard of before. I believe parents will appreciate if they can help their child to learn in fun ways and still protect them with the parental control feature. With this site we also can help our students to prepare for the electronic world and learn another language, what a nice site.
Educators are responsible for building a community in the classroom. That is the beauty of Education. In order to accomplish our expectations as teachers, we need to meet the expectations of our students. Second Life is a very large virtual world made up of people of many different beliefs, compositions, forms, and expressions. Is a shared simulation that provides a unique and flexible environment for educators interested in distance learning, computer supported cooperative work, simulation, new media studies, and corporate training. This is a virtual education solution to amplify an existing curriculum or to create new models for engaged, collaborative learning in the classroom. The advantage of using this program in education is that it is a free 3D virtual and allows your 3D-looking avatar to move around, creating a kind of interaction with learning objects and other people. In addition to this, this program is an open source, so it can be modified by an instructor or community to create a simulated experience that might not be available in real life. Using Second Life in education as a supplement to traditional classroom environments also provides new opportunities for enriching an existing curriculum. Many universities and educational institutions like Penn State are already using it. When you enter in their website for the first time, you'll start on Welcome Island. This area is designed to quickly teach you the basics of the software. The best way to learn Spanish is interacting with Spanish culture, customs, beliefs, and people. Creativity doesn't have to be a solo activity. Virtual Spain is one of the best features of this site because is a Spanish language community to help newcomers, including tutorials, daily classes, cultural activities, festivals, live music, and more. Integrating this program in my Spanish classes it will benefit my students in many ways. My students are going to experience a direct contact with other students from anywhere. This fact will allow my students to choose what they want to learn in Spanish. Some students are majoring in Spanish but others just need a diversity course. Students majoring in Spanish will need to learn more about grammar, culture, customs, and beliefs. Other students will like to learn more about medical terminology which is their field of study. However, software has advantages and disadvantages. My major concern is the endless access to the world. Students may find themselves wasting their time trying to socialize with people. Students can easily lose their focus and use of these tools like a Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube. It is very important to clarify my students that the purpose of integrating this tool in my class is educational only. I recommend this software to my colleagues that want to implement collaborative learning in their classroom.
Peers, I was having problems with my blog. Finally today I was able to post it. I enjoy all you guys posts and I found them very useful for a classroom. I apologize for having my post late but I am hoping it will be a good classroom tool, specially for those that are planning to teach in a holistic way. Thank you guys for your posts.

Thanks for getting us started DeVona! Nice job
